Google Books Beta version has got to go!
Google books' beta version is terrible.
1)The function that allowed users with a personal library has now lost the ability to do searches within their personal library. Perhaps, this feature was "buried" somewhere, but I have not been able to find it and when I posted a comment on the google books blog they responded, "I appreciate your taking the time to offer us this feedback and encourage you to continue to let us know how we can improve Google Books. As this is still a young program, new features are under consideration and your feedback is very helpful." Which is probably a standard, if not automated, response (though they say they read all comments and suggestions). Regardless, this response suggests a function that Google Books had only a few days before and has had for years would be a "new feature."
2*)Now when looking in a particular book you are now longer able to stroll through the book as before--now you must click the arrow and wait for the page to load again, thus making google books less and less like a real book. This "flipping through the book" feature seems to have disappeared.
*Update: After a few minutes after this post the feature returned (maybe I was using it while it was being modified?)
3**)There is a trade-off with the new searching ability of Google Books. There is no longer a page set aside for doing a word search, it relegates what was previously a full page of search results to a crammed small section with only 5 excerpts per page. This page is now shared with the "overview," the "review," "related books" & etc. It is Bad design and poor usage of page space. The positive aspect is that now, as was previously for a brief time, it is possible to copy and paste the excerpts that were found via search.
**Update: A few minutes after posting this rant I tried this one feature again, and it returned to being a whole page for search results in its old image format.
Overall, the new Google Books Beta is not user friendly. The best thing Google Books could do is reverted to its previously set up a few days ago, or at least give users the option to go back to "Google Books Classic."
**Final Update: For a while google books has become fully functional again, searchablity restored.
